What is PGN Format?

PGN (Portable Game Notation) is the standard format for recording chess games. It's a plain text format that includes both the moves of the game and metadata like player names, ratings, event information, and the result. PGN files can also contain comments, variations, and analysis annotations.

PGN format was designed to be easy for humans to read and write, while also being easy for computers to parse. It's supported by all major chess platforms including Chess.com, Lichess, Chess24, and all chess software like ChessBase, SCID, and Fritz.
